Gallows Rock The Purple Turtle

So we were one of a few people lucky enough to head to the Gallows XFM show at the Purple Turtle last night. Having seen the band headline their biggest show ever only last week, it was going to be interesting to see how the did heading back to a grubby venue like the Purple Turtle. Quite simply, they killed it! I watched in awe as they ploughed through a set with a fairly even mix of songs from Orchestra Of Wolves and stunning new album Grey Britain. Frank seems on fine form - his between song banter and huge grin throughout the set suggests he's loving every second of being in the band, a relief as he did start to appear frustrated at the end of their last tour cycle. It's utter chaos from start to finish, as any Gallows show should be. One guys staggers out of the venue with an apparent dislocated shoulder, everyone else leaves smiling from ear to ear.
The fact that Gallows can still tear a small venue like this apart and, more importantly, clearly love doing so is testament to how important and brilliant a band they are. Let's hope they keep it up.

A mention should also go out to openers Sharks. Very much a buzz band at the moment, their update on the sound of the original wave of punk bands is exciting and refreshing. They have all the song writing suss of The Clash and the swagger of Mike Skinner, and it's brilliant!
IT's genuinely refreshing to see bands like Sharks, Gallows, Frank Turner and The King Blues that are so clearly proud to be British. If tonight's set is anything to go by, Sharks could well be reaching, and even surpassing, the success of all of their peers. Here's hoping!

SlamDunk Festival - Review

We hit Leeds this Bank Holiday Sunday for the always awesome Slamdunk Festival. Bigger than ever- 5,000 kids, sold out over 6 stages, the festival is host to a who's who of the current hip and cool crowd. Not bowing out to potential big name headliners, it instead relies on a feast of the current hot and happening bands, both from the UK and acroos the Ocean.

Our day kicks off with a brief set from UK hopefuls Young Guns on the Fishing For Eskimo stage. The place is still filling up, but the band are warmly received, including starting the first circle pit of the day.

Next up we catch a few songs of other UK hopefuls All Forgotten. By now the room is rammed and it appears that all the touring has paid off as these guys control an incredible crowd.

Next we head to the main stage to see The Audition lay down a set of pop punk dance tunes. Always reliable, the guys are on top form and see excited to be part of such a great bill.

Kids In Glass Houses set on the main stage is nothing short of a revelation. They storm through a set that peppers a few new songs between those from their incredible debut album, Smart Casual. Probably the only show they will do this year as they write for the new album, it's simply a joy to watch. Set of the day.

After a bite to eat, we catch the end of Cobra Starship's main stage set. I can't work this band out- how can one of the members of one of the great pop punk bands (long sinced defunct Midtown- check them out!) End out fronting this pointless and tiresome act. A true example of style over substance, the posturing and lame dance moves become tiresome very quickly.

In Case Of Fire are our next port of call. It's a shame these guys haven't attracted a bigger crowd. They are a brilliant band with a host of epic songs in their arsenal. Probably better suited on a bill with Muse that what is essentially a pop punk festival, they are fighting a losing battle from the first chord, which is truly sad as they are a great band.

The Blackout however have a huge crowd in the palm of their hands, and rightly so. It's great to see this band getting on their way to stardom. They are unbeatable live, and in new album, The Best In Town, they have a timebomb waiting to go off. As ever, dual vocalists control the crowd with ease, their between song banter is always hilarious. This band are larger than life and are going to explode this year.

It takes us forever to get out if the room so sadly we miss You Me At Six's conquering mainstage headline performance, though general opinion seems to be that it was as awesome as people have been predicting.

A good day, all in all, it was impossible to see all the bands we wanted to- top of those that we missed were The Ghost Of A Thousand, Attack Attack, The King Blues, Polar Bear Club and We Are The Ocean- go check them all out as well, they rule.

Were you at SlamDunk? Let us know who you thought rocked, that we missed!!!

Me First & the Gimme Gimmes - Win Tickets!!!

These boys are from San Francisco of course, a town that encourages both progressive thought and crossdressing!?!

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes formed in 1995 in an effort to breath some punk rock life back into classic radio hits made famous by rock pioneers like Barry Manilow and Neil Diamond. Getting together with friends and playing thoughtless music was the motivation for the Gimme Gimmes. The Gimmes have broken down the barrier between the golden moldies and punk; finally a band that can be enjoyed kids and parents alike!

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes are the consummate punk rock supergroup. If underground music had an all-star game, these guys would lead the league in voting every season. Beginning with vocal duties, we have Spike. Spike got his break in the Fat Wreck Chords warehouse, where he was notorious for his violent outbursts and singing along to Prince records. His sweet voice and charisma could not be overlooked…the rest is history. Spike also plays bass in the famed San Francisco streetpunk band the Swingin’ Utters. On the tubs—that means the drums—we have Dave, formerly of Santa Barbara greats, Rich Kids on L.S.D., and the current drummer for skate-punk torchbearers, Lagwagon. On guitar we have Jackson. Yeah, yeah, Jackson’s in the Foo Fighters. On bass there’s Fat Mike, and if ever there was a punk tycoon, it would have to be he. As frontman of NOFX and president of Fat Wreck Chords, this man is a veritable crimelord. He’s not Sicilian, he’s Jewish. And finally, we have Joey on guitar. As the singer/songwriter genius behind Lagwagon, this Santa Barbaran is a living legend and leader of the punk rock new school.

What the hell were they thinking? Good question. As you know, or as you goddam-well-oughtta know by now, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes are a punk rock cover band that covers only the very best pop songs from every era! Which leaves us all asking: “Why the hell didn’t I think of that?”

Thanks to our good friends at the Academy Group, we have a pair of tickets to each of their gigs listed below! All you have to do is answer this - Fat Mike (Bassist) is also the frontman to which other legendary pop punk band?

Send your answer including full name, address & contact number and more importantly which of the four venues you'd like to be at to the comps' link below & we'll announce the winners early next week!

Madina Lake & The Audition - Gig Review

Madina Lake and The Audition
Camden Electric Ballroom
Friday 8th May

I arrive too late for The Yashin and Flood Of Red. The Yashin have never done anything for me to be honest, but I have heard good things about the rejuvenated Flood Of Red. They have been away for a long time, but word on the streets is that they are a force to be reckoned with. Roll on the new album for sure. The Audition are on storming form despite the mess around their label meaning they have done little to no press (one interview in Alaska according to singer Danny). The bands set is energetic as ever. Three albums in and their songs are just getting bigger and better. New album "Self Titled Album" is an absolute stormer even if you haven't read much about it!

Which leaves Madina Lake to tie the night up, and they do so in typical excitable style. The energy this band oozes is insane, both twins Matthew and Nathan are never still, in and out of the crowd and bounding around the stage endlessly as they storm through a set taken equally from their debut and new album, Attics To Eden. The kids lap it up of course, and if this crowd is anything to go by, this band have proved themselves on that awkward second album.

Cancer Bats - Gig Review

Cancer Bats @ The Underworld, Camden. Vans sponsored show...

Last night I swung by The Underworld to catch the ever awesome Cancer Bats destroy Camden. The last date on their Vans sponsored tour, the venue was rammed to the rafters and hot as hell- the perfect vibe for a C Bats show. We miss thrash skate punks SSS due to early doors, but are there in time to catch Leeds wreckers boys The Plight. Anyone who knows this band, knows they love to party and their music reflects this- with the rock and roll edge of Guns'n'Roses or Motley Crue, but with the metallic groove of Clutch or Mastodon. They go down a storm. After a distinctly average set by Canadians This Is A Standoff, Cancer Bats ripped through an incredible set chock full of stomping tracks. A cover of Murder City Devils is a highlight alongside the always crushing Hail Destroyer. Few frontmen are as engaging or instantly likeable as singer Liam Cormier. The fact that almost every song is dedicated to everyone in the venue perfectly examples how in love with their fans the band are. Last years Hail Destroyer was one of my favourite albums of 2008, so fingers crossed the next album will see the band hitting even bigger stages. Here's hoping!

Bamboozle!!!

The first thing that strikes you about Bamboozle is the hilarity of
the situation. The festival takes place in the car park of the Giants
Stadium- yep, the car park, not the stadium. This is typical of US
festivals and doesn't provide the best setting- a wasteland of
concrete and Wonka sweet wrappers (the sweet brand sponsor the
festival and are handing out what seems to be an endless supply of
sweets). The next thing that hits you is the amount of merch vendors
that scatter the site. Each band has their own tent to sell from, but
alongside them are a huge array of rising brands including favourites
such as Atticus, Glamour Kills, Rockett, Kill Brand and To Write Love On Her Arms. All these brands are heavily involved with the bands and
throughout the weekend host signings and meet and greets. It's
something we need to do more in the UK if the cues of kids outside these
stands are anything to go by!

So onto the bands- after a fuck up at the guestlist box office, the
first thing to hit our ears is the metal rumblings of Dr.Acula. A
ridiculous name, but the band pull of great, if not amazing, metal
songs in the vein of August Burns Red or As I Lay Dying. Ones to watch
for sure. Next we swing by to check out our good friends in Set Your
Goals
- recently signed to Epitaph, they surpass themselves today.
Tracks from the new album show huge promise and if the insane crowd
that turns out to see them is anything to go by, they are going to be
a band to watch this year! We catch the end of Bayside's set on the
main stage. The band are a far bigger prospect over here than in the
UK, and they go down a storm. After the comedy of The Bloodhound Gang
(guys swallowing each others puke?!
Still can't work if that's the right or wrong side of bad taste!), we
watch New Found Glory spend half an hour showing every one of the
current pop punk pretenders how it's done. Quite simply, this band are
amazing and if you don't like them, you have no ears!

One current band that do rise above the swamp of pop punk wannabes is All Time Low. The band's debut album, So Wrong It's Right, is a instantly loveable album and live they are just as exciting. The excitement that ensues as the band tear into "Dear Maria" is incredible. Next album is going to be amazing for sure. Next up is The Get Up Kids, a band that everyone on this bill owes their careers to! They fly through a set of undeniable classics that leaves everyone over the age of 15 left frothing at the mouth! Brilliant!
Fall Out Boy end the night on a high. There are a lot of people who hate this band, and certainly there are some good arguments to do so (Pete Wentz little pop punk empire is an easy thing to be envious of), but the honest truth is that they have produced four consistent albums chock full of hit songs. With such a strong arsenal of hits they cruise through a closing set leaving punters filing out of the car park with huge grins on their faces.

Sunday see's the weather take a turn for the worst, not that we are going to let this dampen our spirits, as today's bill is equally exciting as yesterday. First up is rising stars Family Force 5. Being honest, I still can't decide if i like or despise this band, they certainly have charisma and are no doubt going to blow up. The jury is out however on if they are a good band. No such indecision for Billy Talent however- these Canadians have two incredible albums under their belt and todays set sees them laying waste to the main stage. Awesome!

We catch a few songs of The Sounds (under appreciated still despite some great tours in the US) on our way to see Hit The Lights. The insanely huge crowd that is waiting for the band is incredible, and their set is equally exciting. It's been a long time coming, but it would appear things are looking good for these guys which is greatly deserved. Sadly we miss the always reliable Silverstein, but we are informed that they played a blinder. Next up are one of the three UK bands on the bill, We Are The Ocean. We're gutted that Enter Shikari are on at the same time, but WATO dispel any upset in seconds as they launch into a truly astounding set. Over here to record their debut album with respected producer Brian McTierman (Thrice), the band are simply incredible, both singers Dan and Liam are stars in their own right. Please check this band out, they are amazing!

Next band of note is the insanely brutal Suicide Silence. This band have to be one of the biggest buzz bands of the festival and rightly so. They are literally a all destroying unit that has to be seen to be believed. The album is great, but make sure you see them live before you judge them. Startlingly good. The same cannot be said for Brokencyde who are (sadly) the other buzz band of the festival. Take a bow guys, you have created a new low in music.

Thankfully, Taking Back Sunday (check out our TBS signed merch giveaway below!!!) are hear to save the day. Four albums in and they are still just as thrilling live as they have ever been.
Picking a set that spans their past three albums and select tracks from their incredible new album, New Again, the play with a new found sense of ease and enjoyment that is brilliantly infectious. It's just great to watch a band who clearly love doing what they do so much.
Adam (singer) then climbs a scary height up the lighting rig for their final song, a feat that leaves the whole audience astounded.

No Doubt have a tough act to follow, but after such a long time away, they hit the spot perfectly. Gwen Stefani is as engaging and brilliant a front person as ever. She leaps around the stage with unending energy as the band tear through a set that sees those songs we all loved many years sounding just as fresh as they did all those years ago. What a perfect end to an incredible weekend. Bamboozle 2009, we salute you!

Brides - Interview

Recently returned from their headlining tour with Lower Than Atlantis, featured in Kerrang! & Rock Sound and picked up by Visible Noise (Lostprophets, BMTH, Your Demise) we thought it'd be a great time to catch up with Brighton punk/hardcore four-piece Brides...

EBTM:
Brides, good to see you guys today, how're things, enjoying some downtime?

Brides: (Jon Barmby - drums)
No problem! Thank you for helping us out. I feel good today, we actually just got back from buying a new van - its a beast! now that is all sorted so yeh, today is good!

EBTM:
You've recently hooked up with Visible Noise, they're responsible for launching the likes of Lostprophets & Bring me the Horizon amongst others, how does it feel to be with the label?

Brides: (JB)
It's an absolute joy, we had been long time admirers of the label not only due to the great roster of bands the label is home too but also the way in which the label was run. We met with Julie who is head of the label around August last year and she told us about the label in the way that they operate and it really is a fantastic label to be a part off, they have all their bands best intentions at heart and that is refreshing to see from a label. We frequently feel very honored to be a part of their set up and hope that we continue to work together in the future.

EBTM:
Ocular.Unveil has drawn camparisons with A Wilhelm Scream, Hot Water Music & Coheed & Cambria but how would you guys break it down & describe the sound, would you consider these bands an influence or what else is driving the music? What can people expect when they listen to the album?

Brides: (JB)
It's probably wise to tell you that the sound we have is not a sound that we intended to create - we started playing together as a band and the sound developed into what it is over a period of time. Being a band that is built on so many different influences our creative span is somewhat wider when we come to write music and I think that shows. Overall we like to take aspects of different music we enjoy and work on putting them together in a layered fashion - for example, Trist (Guitar) claims to base his guitar playing on that from Dire Straits, Max likes to work his vocals around that of A Wilhelm Scream, Polar Bear Club and Hot Water Music etc. That way, everyone kind of brings their own sound to the band and fortunately enough it seems to blend well together. I think people listening to the album for the first time should expect a new mix of Hardcore, Punk, Prog and straight up Rock for a fast 25 minutes filled with passion and energy! I think that's the best way I can describe it.

EBTM:
You've only been together for 18 months, what're the highlights from that period, any bands you've been psyched about playing with?

Brides: (JB)
Its been a really good 2 years to be honest, in that time some of my personal highlights include both times recording - to me there is nothing more exciting than hearing ideas you have been working on for months sometimes years come together, its an exciting prospect. Also last year we played with A Wilhelm Scream twice in the UK and that for us was a massive highlight, that band is about 95% the reason we are a band today so to be able to share the stage with them aswell was an honor. Obviously Visible Noise was a massive highlight too, it was a really good feeling that a label of that stature would be willing to reach out and help us in the way they did. Another highlight for me is actually the 'future' I am so excited about moving forward with this record, Download Festival for one and others i'm sure too come, I think it's good when the future excites you.

EBTM:
You're from Brighton, a town I know pretty well & it's where I first met you guys a few years before Brides formed...but for those that don't know, in a nutshell what's the place like? You all enjoy living/playing music there?

Brides: (JB)
I would say - 'Beautiful Town, Full of Arseholes' - nah, i'm only joking. It's a beautiful place and sometimes I take living there for granted, it's only when we go away on tour and see some of the other places around the UK that we come back to Brighton and think 'You know what, this place isn't half bad!' There are alot of pretentious people here who shall I say follow the trends a bit too vividly but I guess you get that everywhere. Unfortunately I think that that is the reason in the downfall of the music scene here, I mean the scene isn't bad but it's nowhere near what it was a few years back. The punk scene in Brighton used to be something that was talked about everywhere and now with the recent new wave of music that has unfortunately somewhat died. Overall I think that it could do with a few more mid-sized venues, it feels alot like bands can only go from a small venue to a large venue - there is a serious lack of middle ground and that can hinder some bands.

EBTM:
What album are each of you guys listening to at the moment?

Brides: (JB)
Recently I have been listening to alot of Cult of Luna especially Eternal Kingdom at the moment which I am loving, also mixing that up with sort of old school Blink 182 in Enema of the State which I haven't heard in absolute years but am again thoroughly enjoying that too! We recently played with Devil Sold His Soul which was alot of fun so I have been sessioning their album 'Fragile Hope' of late which is definitely something I can't recommend enough, lovely dudes too!

EBTM:
Any new bands we should be checking out, any tips on who to watch this year?

Brides: (JB)
We just got back of our headline tour with support from Lower Than Atlantis, I honestly felt bad that these guys where supporting us as they are such a tight band both on record and live and their new album that they are demoing at the moment is going to blow everyone out of the water, expect big things! We get asked the question of bands we recommend in almost every interview and I hardly ever mention the band that I think deserves the most credit which is A Wilhelm Scream. They might not need our help seeing as they are on Nitro Records but it seems they don't get anywhere near the credit they deserve, so if you haven't checked them out already - do it, you will love it!

EBTM:
You're confirmed for Download 09'!! You must be pretty psyched about that? Any plans on partying there or you gonna keep it a chilled w'end??!

Brides: (JB)
Not to be one of those 'we party 24 hours a day!' band because frankly we don't, no one does! but yes we do indeed plan to live it up at Download - it just means having maybe a not so mental night on Saturday in order to get up nice and early Sunday to play which I am not complaining about at all! If you see us come and have a beer with us, that would be nice!

EBTM:
And talking of Download, you've kindly invited EBTM along with you for the entire w'end, we're pretty stoked so a huge thanks for that! It's going to be a great w'end & we'll be following and reporting on your every move...you ready for that?!!

Brides: (JB)
Not a problem at all! Haha, I think that's awesome as we love to tell people what we get up too, I don't know how many people will actually be interested in hearing it but maybe they do as we have had a number of people asking to do a 'Brides at Download' section which should be awesome. All I can say is anyone reading this and thinking of coming to see us play while at Download - please do! It's going to be an amazing weekend, if you have seen the line-up you won't disagree. So come help us celebrate on what is the last day of Download, the Sunday on the 3rd Stage, Cheers.
